Why altitude matters here
The trek climbs from Kathmandu at 1,350 m (4,429 ft) to a highest sleeping point of 3,660 m (12,008 ft) at Khopra Ridge, with a day-hike high point of 4,500 m (14,765 ft) at Kaire Lake. Altitude affects people differently, so the itinerary is described by where you sleep as well as by how high you walk.
How the itinerary handles it
Your sleeping elevations are:
- Kathmandu, 1,350 m, for the first two nights
- Ghandruk, 1,940 m
- Tadapani, 2,700 m
- Dobato, 3,350 m
- Upper Chistibung, 2,975 m
- Khopra Ridge, 3,660 m, for two nights
- Swanta, 2,200 m
- Ulleri, 2,050 m
- Pokhara, 827 m
- Kathmandu, 1,350 m, on the final night
Day 8 is the acclimatisation day. You walk towards Kaire Lake, reaching 4,500 m, and then return to sleep at Khopra Ridge at 3,660 m, so the high point of that day is not a sleeping elevation. A half-day walk from Khopra can be arranged for anyone who does not want to walk all the way to the lake.
Fitness and time on foot
The source describes this as a short trek that still needs a certain level of fitness. Walking times are about 3 hours on Day 3 (after a flight and a two-hour drive), 3–4 hours on Day 4, 4–5 hours on Days 5 and 6, 3–4 hours on Day 7, about 10–11 hours on Day 8, and 5–6 hours on Days 9, 10 and 11. Day 9 is a steep descent of roughly 1,460 m. Long days on foot are the main physical demand of the trip.
If you feel unwell
Tell your guide early if you feel unwell, and follow their advice. Groups are led by licensed guides, with 1 guide for every 8 guests, and the guide can adjust the plan for the day. THG makes no promise about how quickly help can be arranged in remote areas, which is one reason to travel with suitable insurance.
What is not included
Personal travel, medical and evacuation insurance is not included, and each guest arranges their own. Please speak to your own doctor about the altitude and walking times before you travel.
