Kanchenjunga is a journey into one of Nepal’s most remote mountain regions. From the tea gardens of Ilam, the trail climbs through forest and highland villages to the glaciers beneath the world’s third-highest mountain, then crosses high passes into the Yalung Valley for a second view of its south face. With two acclimatisation days, a long hike to Pangpema and a crossing beyond Sele Le, this is a demanding circuit for travellers drawn to big landscapes, living cultures and quieter trails. Limbu, Rai, Sherpa and Bhote communities share the route. It suits walkers in good physical condition who value time in the mountains over comfort
Highlights
- Two faces of one mountain: see Kanchenjunga (8,586 m), the world’s third-highest peak, from both Pangpema, the north base camp, and Ramche, the south base camp.
- Tea gardens to glaciers: walk from the tea estates of Ilam and Kanyam through rhododendron forest and yak pastures to the glaciers beneath the mountain.
- High-pass crossing: cross Sele Le, Sinion La and Mirgin La on the way between the Ghunsa and Yalung valleys, with wide views when the weather allows.
- Living cultures: pass through Limbu, Rai, Sherpa and Bhote villages, with prayer flags, mani walls and monasteries along the trail.
- Jannu and a quieter trail: use the Kambachen rest day for a hike to Jannu Base Camp, on a circuit far from the crowds of Nepal’s busiest routes
