The Trip, in our own words.

Khopra Ridge threads a quieter line through the Annapurna region, leaving the main trail after Tadapani for rhododendron forest, herders’ pastures and a high, open ridge. Past Tadapani, most stops are only two or three lodges, and the route keeps its distance from the busier circuits. One day on the ridge itself is set aside for a long walk to Khayer Lake, a place held sacred by Hindus, before a steep descent through terraced hill villages. The trip suits fit walkers who are comfortable with long days, teahouse lodging and a measured pace, and who value space and silence. Pokhara and Kathmandu frame the journey with hotel nights and time in both cities.

Highlights

  • Rhododendron woodland — Between Tadapani and Dobato the trail runs through tall rhododendron forest, forming a canopy overhead and in bloom in spring.
  • Off the main trail — After Tadapani the route leaves the main trail for five days in a more remote part of the Annapurna region
  • Above the Kali Gandaki — A short walk from Khopra Ridge reaches a viewpoint over the Kali Gandaki river, far below in its deep valley.
  • Khayer Lake day — An early start from Khopra leads to a lake sacred to Hindus, with Hindu and Buddhist shrines on its shore
  • Ghandruk’s story — The first night on the trail is in a village that is a major recruitment centre for Gurkha soldiers and a hub of conservation work

What about meals? +

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided during the trek, with a packed lunch on Day 8. In Kathmandu only breakfast is included, apart from the farewell dinner on the last evening. See Good to Know: Where you stay, eat & drink
