The Trip, in our own words.

The Manaslu Circuit follows the Budhi Gandaki upstream from the road at Machha Khola, through Gurung villages, forest and mani-lined trail, to the high valley beneath Mount Manaslu (8,163 m), the eighth-highest mountain in the world. It then crosses the Larkya La and descends to Bimthang and Tilije. The route is remote, the teahouses are basic and the infrastructure is far lighter than in the Annapurna or Everest regions; for many walkers that is the appeal. It suits fit, well-prepared trekkers who want quiet trails, village culture and a true high-pass crossing, with an acclimatisation day built in at Samagaon. Read the full overview

Highlights

  • The route follows the river upstream over suspension bridges and stone stairways, through bamboo forest and a steep gorge, before the valley opens.
  • Pass Gurung settlements such as Philim, then chortens, mani walls and gompas through the upper valley.
  • A full day at Samagaon lets the body adjust, with Pungyen Gompa and the village's mani stones close by
  • Larkya La A : glacier-moraine ascent from the Dharamsala shelter, then a long descent to the pastures of Bimthang.
  • Manaslu Conservatipon :The trail moves through river forest, terraced farmland, juniper and birch woods, and high alpine terrain.

The day-by-day, across 14 days.

Eight walking days and one acclimatisation day with a hike, told honestly: walking times and elevations are shown for each day.

Questions we are asked most.

Sorted by subject so you can scan only what concerns you. For anything else, our trip director is one phone call away.

How difficult is the Manaslu Circuit? +

It is a demanding, remote high-altitude trek. Walking days run from about 4 to 9 hours, and two long road days bookend the trek. It is not the most gruelling high-altitude route, but it needs solid fitness and mental readiness. See Fitness & preparation in Good to Know.

What is the highest point, and where do I sleep that night? +

The highest point of the route is the Larkya La, crossed on Day 11. The highest sleeping point is the Dharamsala at 4,460 m (14,633 ft) on Day 10, the night before the pass. See Altitude & acclimatisation.

How many acclimatisation days are there? +

There is one full rest day, at Samagaon on Day 8, where you also visit Pungyen Gompa. Days 9 and 10 are short walks of approx. 4–5 hours each.

What if I feel unwell at altitude? +

Tell your guide as soon as you notice symptoms such as headache, loss of appetite or stomach upset. Your guide can adjust the plan. We cannot promise any particular outcome or speed of evacuation, and medical and evacuation costs are the guest’s responsibility, so arrange suitable insurance.

Are permits included? +

Yes, all required permits are included. The route passes through the Manaslu Conservation Area. We confirm the details against official sources when you book.

Is the visa included? +

No. The Nepal visa fee is not included, so check the current entry requirements before you travel.

When is the best time to go? +

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Trails are generally dry, spring brings mild temperatures and flowers, and autumn brings crisp air and clear skies. October is busy. See Weather & seasons.

What if the weather changes the plan+

The itinerary is the plan, and weather and trail conditions can change a day. Your guide will adjust it. The Larkya La day is usually started very early to cross before the stronger afternoon winds.

What is the accommodation like? +

On trek you stay in very basic teahouses on a twin-shared basis, and at the Dharamsala you sleep in a stone shelter. In Kathmandu you stay at Hotel Dwarika’s or Hyatt Regency. See Sleeping, eating & drinking.

What will I eat and drink? +

You have breakfast, lunch and dinner each trek day, from teahouse menus or local homes. Expect simple food such as Tibetan bread, dal bhat and tsampa porridge, with limited variety. Sip fluids steadily, as cold can suppress thirst.

How many guides and porters are there? 1+

1 guide for every 8 guests, and 1 porter for every 2 guests. All guides are licensed and English-speaking.

How do I reach the trailhead and get home+

By private road transfer. Day 3 is a drive of approx. 9–10 hours from Kathmandu to Machha Khola, and Day 13 is a drive of approx. 11–12 hours back via Besi Sahar. Private airport transfers are included on arrival and departure.

What is included? +

Licensed, English-speaking guides and porters (ratios above), 3 nights in Kathmandu with breakfast, breakfast, lunch and dinner on trek, all required permits, private transfers including airport transfers, and salary and insurance for all crew members

What is not included? +

The Nepal visa fee, personal travel, medical and evacuation insurance, personal expenses, tips for guides and porters, international flights, and dinner or any meal other than breakfast in Kathmandu.
