Overview

Mount Everest Base Camp Trekking leads you on the same route, where legendary mountaineers; Tenzing and Hillary first summited Mt. Everest in 1953. After decades of historical climbing, the influx of trekkers, adventurers, and mountaineers is increasing. Every best season of the year-round makes Mount Everest Base Camp one of the most favoured adventure destinations.

Adventure that takes right beneath the towering South Face of the world’s number one Mt. Everest at base camp. Amidst remorseless fields of moraine, ice, snow, and glaciers of arctic likes landscapes terrains.

The Everest base camp is also the base of the world’s 4th highest Mt. Lhotse makes this trek quite special. Mount Everest Base Camp Trekking begins with a scenic short, and sweeping flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. Then lands on Tenzing & Hillary Airport with unique short runways and small parking spaces.

The walk starts heads down the main trail through several lovely Sherpa traditional villages. Then enter Sagarmatha National Park, enriched with exotic flora and fauna, from here onwards with a climb to the famous Namche Bazaar. At Namche Bazaar, an extra day for acclimatization and exploring its scenic viewpoints and impressive local cultures.

Adventure continues on the high scenic trail to Tengboche Monastery, located on a picturesque high ridge. From Tengboche, the tree lines drop, and the lush vegetation for sheer mountain wilderness to Dingboche and Lobuche settlements. Slowly walk leads to Everest base camp past the last settlement of Gorakshep.

The trail heads east to reach the final goal destination of the adventure at Everest base camp. Enjoy the dramatic scenery amidst the towering giant peaks of Lhotse, Pumori, and Nuptse with close views of the massif Khumbu Icefall.

On completing, the first highlights and then climb to Kalapathar rocky black top, a popular ridge. Rewards fantastic close views of Mt. Everest and Mt. Pumori with arrays of snow peaks. From the highest point of the adventure, return route downhill to Namche Bazaar past scenic Pheriche Valley.

Enjoying time in Namche Bazaar, a long walk downhill with a few short climbs to Lukla for the last overnight stop. The next morning, a short scenic flight brings you to Kathmandu after a fabulous experience on Mount Everest Base Camp Trekking.

The Best Seasons

The best seasons for Mount Everest Base Camp Treks, are spring and autumn. Spring starts from March to May, most days are sunny but can get cloudy in the late afternoon. Chances of light snowfall with cold mornings and nighttime after Namche Bazaar. But beautiful with wildflowers in seasonal bloom, especially rhododendrons of various colors, around the Tengboche Monastery areas.

The next best season is autumn/fall, which begins in September and ends in November. One of the high seasons for views and pleasant walks, sunny days most of the time in autumn. But gets dark soon, due to short sunlight hours, cold morning, and late afternoon till nighttime. Could get snowfall from Namche Bazaar onwards sometimes.

The route and trails to Everest Base Camp Treks

The route is straightforward with a signpost at each junction of the mid-ways, so there will be no confusion. The trails are nicely laid and good for walking until Lobuche, from Lobuche to Gorakshep and Everest base camp. Can slightly changes of walking path, due to seasonal avalanches and rock falls, but nothing dangerous taking slow.

Especially on rocky trails of big boulders and the moraine of ice and glaciers, the trek begins on a gradual trail. Few short uphill’s and downhill, but on leaving Dudh Koshi River, steep uphill on a winding trail to Namche Bazaar. As well as crossing suspension bridges over the same rivers a couple of times. From Namche Bazaar to Dingboche and Lobuche to Everest base camp is on the normal route with a slow rise in elevation.

Day 01: Fly to Lukla 2, 846 m and trek to Phakding 2,645 m – 04 hrs.
Day 02: Trek to Namche Bazaar 3,440 m / 11, 350 feet – 06 hrs.

Itinerary

Day 01

Fly to Lukla 2, 846 m and trek to Phakding 2,645 m - 04 hrs.

Duration 4 hours
Distance 6.2 km
Morning as time for flight to Lukla, transfer to Kathmandu domestic airport. After checking in and through security, then board in a small aircraft for sweeping scenic flight to Lukla. During air-borne spectacular views of Himalayan range of peaks with Mt. Everest and Nepal’s beautiful country landscapes. After a short flight of 30 to 35 minutes landing at Lukla’s Tenzing & Hillary Airport, after claiming the baggage. Follow the guide to start the trek through Lukla town past shops, stores and restaurants. On the downhill to Dudh Koshi River past serval villages to reach overnight stop in Phakding village.
Day 02

Trek to Namche Bazaar 3,440 m / 11, 350 feet - 06 hrs.

From Phakding a long day walk to Namche Bazaar, due to rapid rise in altitude. Morning walk follows above the Dudh Koshi River and crossing bridge with up to Monjo village. To enter Sagarmatha National Park, listed in World Heritage Sites, Sagarmatha a name for Everest in Nepal. For the Sherpa is Chomolungma similar to Tibetan name and language. From here cross the bridge to Jorsalle for lunch stop. After lunch walk on the river bed within forest of rhododendrons and pine trees and cross a high bridge. From here on undulating winding uphill to reach Namche Bazaar for two overnights stop. Namche Bazaar a size of a town with colorful nice houses offers many good lodge accommodation and best food.
Day 03

At Namche for acclimatization and short scenic hike.

A perfect place and height for rest and acclimatization day, before heading higher altitude. At Namche enjoy a short hike and exercise for acclimatization, the best is to high above Namche Bazaar. Where national park headquarters located with an interesting museum, offers grand views of Mt. Everest. Includes Lhotse, Nuptse and beautiful peak of Ama Dablam, Tharmasarku and Kwangde peaks. Options for hike to Everest View Hotel, first luxury hotel in Khumbu as well listed in Guinness Book of Record. As the world’s highest luxury hotel at 3,800 m high. Rest of the day after lunch explore the town of Namche Bazaar.
Day 04

Trek to Tengboche 3,867 m - 05 hrs.

Enjoy the day walk from Namche Bazaar on scenic winding pleasant trail with glorious views of Everest. As well other adjoining snow peaks the down to Imjatse River at Phunki Tenga for lunch stop. Afternoon a steep climbs up through lovely forest to Tengboche and its colorful monastery of great religious interest. After a good climb of few hours reach on top of a small plateau at scenic location at Tengboche. Where you can enjoy the panorama of Mt. Everest and series of peaks, that surrounds Tengboche. Located amidst lovely forest surroundings, overnights in its nice simple lodge. Options to walk further down to Deboche another small settlement with few nice lodges.
Day 05

Trek to Dingboche 4,410 m - 05 hrs.

Distance 9.1 km
Enjoy the morning superb views of snow peaks, and then downhill to cross a bridge. From the bridge onwards the tree lines drop for short bush of junipers then reaching Pangboche. The last permanent village before Everest base camp, walk heads with slow up to Somare for lunch stop. Afternoon can get quite windy and cold as the height gains to reach Dingboche for two overnights stops.
Day 06

Rest day in Dingboche for acclimatization and short excursion.

Dingboche a nice settlement with many fine lodges, situated within scenic Imjatse Valley. Stands below North Face of Ama Dablam and south of Lhotse and Nuptse mountains with views of famous Island Peak. At Dingboche options for hike on top Nakarjung hill for best panorama of surrounding scenery of snow peaks. Includes views of Mt. Makalu towards east, a good acclimatization hike, afternoon at leisure.
Day 07

Trek to Lobuche 4,960 m - 05 hrs.

Distance 6.6 km
After Dingboche adventure heads closer to the destination, a short steep up and then on winding gradual path. Reaching Thugla, where Pheriche and Dingboche route joins, a good place for lunch stop. Afternoon a strenuous climb of less than an hour to Thugla high ridge. From here with slow easy walk to Lobuche for overnight halt.
Day 08

Trek to Everest Base Camp 5,364 m and back to Gorakshep - 06 hrs.

Today is the final day to reach the main highlights towards Everest base camp, starting early morning after breakfast. The walk follows north with short climb to reach a rocky moraine above Khumbu glacier. Then slowly the trail follows down to a wide sandy field, where Gorakshep is located. After a short rest continue walk heading east, the reaching Everest base camp. Standing at the bottom of towering snow peaks of Lhotse, Nuptse, Lingtrin and Pumori, with close to Khumbu icefall and glaciers. After achieving the goal, return walk to Gorakshep for overnight stop, before heading downhill to Namche Bazaar and Lukla.
Day 09

Climb Kalapathar 5,643 m/18,514 feet trek to Pangboche 3, 900 m.

Distance 22 km
Early morning hike before breakfast a steep climb of near two hours to reach on top of famous Kalapathar. The highest point of the adventure facing close views of Mt. Everest and surrounding giant peaks. After a great adventurous morning climb descent to Gorakshep for breakfast and packing. From Gorakshep downhill to Lobuche and Thugla, and our route diverts down to Pheriche Valley. At Pheriche a lovely settlement with number of good lodges and restaurants, stopping for lunch. Afternoon walk down to a river and then short climb on top of a small hill, and then downhill to Pangboche village for overnight halt.
Day 10

Trek to Namche Bazaar- 06 hrs.

Distance 9.1 km
A long day hike but more or less downhill with few ups to Tengboche, and from Phunki Tenga. Rest of the walk on gradual winding down to Namche Bazaar for overnight stop.
Day 11

Trek to Lukla 2, 846 m-07 hours.

Duration 7 Hours
Distance 14 km
Enjoy the last day walk of the adventures, a long descent to Dudh Koshi River. The walk follows to a short climb at the entrance and exit post of national park at Monjo village. From here onward on gradual path to Phakding for lunch, afternoon a pleasant walk with last climb to Lukla. On reaching Lukla check into a nice lodge for final overnight around Khumbu and Everest region.
Day 12

Fly from Luka to Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.

Distance 135 km
As time for flight to Kathmandu, getting ready by 6 a.m. transfer to Lukla air Terminal. Waiting for the plane to arrive from Kathmandu, and then get on board in the small aircraft for scenic flight. On reaching Kathmandu airport transfer for a short drive back to your hotel, rest of the day at leisure.

How difficult is Everest Base Camp Trek?

A moderate to adventurous with steep ups and downhills, one of the best and perfect walks around the Himalayas. Trekkers must be aware that Nepal and Himalayan landscapes are all ups and downhills. The only flat land is in the southern Terai belt of Nepal, walking slow and steady will overcome the difficulty.

The walk is straight forward without much difficulties, as long one takes it slow and steady. The only tough about this treks is the gain in altitude, but walking slow and having enough drinks. It is the best way as precaution against the problem of the altitude gain. Rest of the route is straightforward on daily walks to each overnights stops.

Is Everest Base Camp a popular trekking destination?

All lodges on overnight stops, have electricity facilities either run by Hydro or solar power. Trekkers can charge their electronic items on paying extra for charging each gadgets. Some lodges offer free Wi-Fi and Internet services while few places might charge extra. But the connection in some places can be disturbing and takes time to run the service either in long distance call or using the internets.

How are the lodge facilities and foods on this treks?

Simply the best that one can expect around the mountainous and hilly region around Himalayas. The lodge facilities much better in Namche, Phakding and Lukla to Dingboche with options for attached bath and toilets.

Most lodges provide common bathe and toilets with extra charge for using hot showers. However, the rooms are neat and cozy the dining have fireplace to warm the rooms while you enjoy the meals. The foods depending upon the standard of the lodge, but most lodge restaurants provide long list of food menu. From Set menu or La Carte, including all types of refreshments to enjoy, as well some lodge provides fresh bakery products also. The only simple and basic accommodation is in Gorakshep, due to the nature of the cold and high terrains.

How fit one should be to enjoy Everest Base Camp treks?

Requires all trekkers to be suitably physically fit and in good health, to take the challenge walking steeps and downhills. When planning and booking this trip, one should need outdoor exercise from walking, jogging. Or any other good physical exercise for an hour on daily basis, and checking your health. Does Everest Base Camp is within the National Parks?

All the regions of Khumbu, and Everest region is within Sagarmatha National Park. Trekkers have to obtain the Park entrance ticket. The checking and registration for National Park is done at Monjo, and Namche Bazaar.
