Overview

Annapurna Circuit & Thorang-La Pass Trekking, is regarded as one of the world’s top adventure destinations. Trekkers can experience in less than two week’s treks around the north and south sides of the Annapurna’s.

Annapurna Circuit and Thorang-La Pass, in earlier days, it was more than three weeks of walks. At present from the last few years, the motorable road has reached Manang village. As well as the road have extended to the other sides of Thorang-La at Mustang district. Making the trekking much shorter less than two weeks, but still the majestic views of snow mountains. The impressive cultures around Manang Valley remain the same as they have been for hundreds of centuries.

Adventure leads to dramatic bio-diversity from lower warm areas of Lamjung to cooler arctic terrains of upper Manang. The scenery changes along the daily walks, which makes the trekking enjoyable and fascinating to experience. Start with drives from Kathmandu to the warm farm town of Bhesishar and then heading up on a winding dirt trail. To reach Chame the headquarters town of Manang district, where the air gets much cooler, walk through a lovely forested trail.

Then entering, a wide scenic valley of Upper Manang, the walk follows from one lovely village to another cultural settlement. Have time for acclimatization in Manang to explore its scenic viewpoints and then towards Thorang-La Pass. The boundaries of Manang and Mustang district is a long and exciting climb but worth the glorious views. From the top of Thorang-La downhill to Mustang areas at the holy site of Muktinath.

The journey continues around the beautiful country of Kaligandaki River Valley past Jomsom and the lovely Marpha and Tukuche villages. To reach around warm areas in Tatopani village, and then with the last climb to Ghorepani and Poon Hill. A grand spot for views of the stunning sunrise over an array of snow peaks of the Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and Manaslu Himalayan ranges. Slowly, the walk finally ends on reaching Ulleri village for a drive to the beautiful tourist city of Pokhara.

The Best Seasons

The best seasons for Annapurna Circuit & Thorang-La Pass Treks, are spring and autumn. Spring starts from March to May, most days are sunny but can get cloudy in the late afternoon. Chances of light showers, with cold mornings and nighttime after Chame Town and Pisang village. But beautiful with wildflowers in seasonal bloom, especially rhododendrons of various colors, around the southern hills of Annapurna Himalayas.

The next best season is autumn/fall, which begins in September and ends in November. One of the high seasons for views and pleasant walks, sunny days most of the time in autumn. But gets dark soon, due to short sunlight hours, cold morning, and late afternoon till nighttime. Could get snowfall from Chame Town above 2,700 m onwards sometimes.

The route and trails to Annapurna Circuit and Thorang-La Pass Treks

In the last few years, the trek has been shortened for a few days due to the construction of a motorable road. The motor road has reached as far as Manang village through Chame Town and at Muktinath to Tatopani village joining tourist city of Pokhara. Making the treks much easier to cover in less than two weeks.

The motorable road is quite rough on dirt, and mud tracks from Bhesishar onwards to Chame Town. Where walk takes you to a pleasant trail through lovely rhododendrons and pine forests to enter Manang Valley from Pisang village en route Manang and Thorang-La Pass. A steep climb to reach the top of Thorang-La Pass, a pleasant walk around Kaligandaki Valley in Mustang district. The last climb to Ghorepani and Poon Hill from the lovely village of Tatopani with hot spring.

Day 01: Drive to Bhesishar Town 760 m around Lamjung district-05 hrs.
Day 02: Drive to Chame 2,710 m -04 hrs.

Itinerary

Day 01

Drive to Bhesishar Town 760 m around Lamjung district-05 hrs.

The driving journey begins to Bhesishar Town, for first overnight beyond Kathmandu. The drive follows to low warm farm villages and towns, then diverts from the main Pokhara and Kathmandu highway. To reach Bhesishar for overnight, the headquarter town of Lamjung district.
Day 02

Drive to Chame 2,710 m -04 hrs.

From Bhesishar the drive follows Masrsyangdi River to Syange village, and then on winding uphill to Jagat, Chamje. As the drive enters Manang areas from Talbesi to reach Dharapani and Chame Town on time for dinner and overnight stop. Chame a large town and headquarters of Manang district. Enjoy the comfort of a nice lodge, having time to explore the town.
Day 03

Trek to Pisang 3,115 m - 05 hrs.

From Chame morning start the first walk of the adventure, cross a bridge and following forested path to Brathang village. The walk leads to cross the bridge over the same Masrsyangdi River, and then climb up to a ridge. The hill top called Dukure Pokhari, with few lodges and shops. A nice place for lunch with views of majestic Pisang Peak. Afternoon walk leads down to a flat valley and then reaching Pisang village for overnight halt.
Day 04

Trek to Manang 3,540 m- 04 hrs.

Duration 4 Hours
After Pisang village entering scenic Manang Valley, morning climbs uphill to a ridge top. Having short rest to enjoy the views of Manang valley surrounded by giant peaks of Chulus. Includes Pisang peaks and Annapurna range of peaks, then down to Hongde village, and then to Braga. At Braga with time for visit to the old monastery stands atop the village of Braga. Enjoying the tour of the monastery facing magnificent views of surrounding mountain range. A short walk to Manang village for two overnight stops in the comfort of a nice lodge.
Day 05

Rest day in Manang for acclimatization and local excursion.

A perfect with ideal height for rest and acclimatization in Manang village. At Manang with several scenic places for day hikes, the shortest and best is Gangapurna Himal glacier. Located south of Manang village, an hour more walks down and up to reach the view-point. Enjoy the dramatic scenery of Gangapurna Himal Ice-Fall and glaciers with turquoise colored Manang small lake. Afternoon at leisure, and explore the Manang village and its impressive cultures and custom.
Day 06

Trek to Yak Kharka 4, 110 m - 04 hrs.

A short scenic walk to Yak Kharka for lunch and overnight stops, morning follows on gentle trail. Reaching a small place at Ghunsang with views of Gangapurna Himal and Chulu West peak. The walk follows past smaller settlements to reach Yak Kharka, situated on a wide valley. Check into a nice lodge for lunch and overnight, afternoon at leisure to enjoy the beautiful scenery of snow peaks.
Day 07

Trek to High Camp 4,900 m -04 hrs.

From Yak Kharka leads on gradual path, a short day walk to High Camp and Phedi of Thorang-La Pass. The gain in altitude makes the walk slower, following the trail past Ledar. Then down to a stream with steep up and walk on gentle path to Thorang Phedi. Located on the far corner of Manang the valley rim, take a short refreshing rest. From Phedi an hour steep climb to the ridge top, at High Camp for lunch and overnight stop.
Day 08

Trek to Muktinath 3, 800 m via Thorang la pass 5,416 m-06 hrs.

An early start at the break of dawn, having breakfast and carrying packed lunch. Start the fresh morning walk on a gentle path for a short while, then on steep winding climb. After a strenuous walk reach on top Thorang-La Pass, the highest point of the adventure. Enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the snow peaks with Annapurna, Chulu, and Damodar Himal. As far as Manaslu in the east with Dhaulagiri towards west, after a stunning view. A long downhill to reach Muktinath, a holy site and then short walk to a village for overnight halt. Muktinath revered as a holy pilgrimage place for the Hindu followers, having time for tour of the temple.
Day 09

Drive to Tatopani 1,200 m - 04 hrs.

At Muktinath the motor road has reached as far as Upper Mustang, from here skipping few days trekking. Enjoying the comfort of an exciting drive to reach low warm areas to Tatopani. A village with natural hot spring, from Muktinath on completing the tough part of the adventure over Thorang-La pass. Morning drive leads downhill to a wide windswept valley of Kaligandaki River, the drive heads past Jomsom town. The headquarters of Mustang area, the ride leads through lovely villages of Marpha and Tukuche famous for delicious apples. Then heading towards Kalapani village, back into forest as ride follows towards low warm farm area. Finally, the drive ends reaching Tatopani, a lovely village with many good lodges, to enjoy the comfort of a nice rooms. Have time for refreshing dip in the hot spring pools.
Day 10

Trek to Ghorepani 2,880 m - 06 hrs.

After a pleasant overnight in Tatopani, morning walk follows the Kaligandaki River for a short while. Then climb for an hour to Ghara farm village, the walk follows uphill to Sikha and Chitre villages. Then reaching Ghorepani for last overnight halt around the mountain village.
Day 11

Hike to Poon Hill 3,210 m, trek to Ulleri village 2,050 m and drive to Pokhara 860 m -06 hrs.

An early morning starts for an hour hike to Poon Hill in time before the sunrise. Enjoy the stunning sunrise views over chain of snow mountains with worlds three highest peaks. Includes Mt. Dhaulagiri, Annapurna to Manaslu Himal with majestic Fish Tail peak the Machhapuchare Himal. After a wonderful morning views downhill to Ghorepani for breakfast, enjoy the last day walk through beautiful rhododendron forest to reach Ulleri village. Our trek ends here at hill village of Ulleri and then an interesting drive in a jeep for exciting journey of few hours to reach Pokhara. On arrival in Pokhara by the beautiful Phewa lake side. Drive to Kathmandu-06 hours.

01: How difficult is Annapurna Circuit Trek?

A moderate to adventurous with steep ups and downhills, one of the best and perfect walks around the Himalayas. Trekkers must be aware that Nepal and Himalayan landscapes are all ups and downhills. The only flat land is in the southern Terai belt of Nepal, walking slow and steady will overcome the difficulty.

All lodges on overnight stops, have electricity facilities either run by Hydro or solar power. Trekkers can charge their electronic items on paying extra for charging each gadgets. Some lodges offer free Wi-Fi and Internet services while few places might charge extra. But the connection in some places can be disturbing and takes time to run the service either in long distance call or using the internets.

05: How are the lodge facilities and foods on this treks?

Simply the best that one can expect around the mountainous and hilly region around Himalayas. The lodge facilities much better from Chame and around Manang Valley with options for attached bath and toilets. Most lodges provide common bathe and toilets with extra charge for using hot showers.

However, the rooms are neat and cozy the dining have fireplace to warm the rooms while you enjoy the meals. The foods depending upon the standard of the lodge, but most lodge restaurants provide long list of food menu. From Set menu or La Carte, including all types of refreshments to enjoy, as well some lodge provides fresh bakery products also. The only simple and basic accommodation is at High Camp due to the nature of the cold and high terrains.

06: How fit one should be to enjoy Annapurna Circuit treks?

Requires all trekkers to be suitably physically fit and in good health, to take the challenge walking steeps and downhills. When planning and booking this trip, one should need outdoor exercise from walking, jogging. Or any other good physical exercise for an hour on daily basis, and checking your health. 07: Is Annapurna Circuit falls within the National Parks?

All the regions of Annapurna Himalayas falls within ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Project) established in 1985 and was active from 1992. Trekkers have to obtain ACAP entrance ticket to enter all around Annapurna region. The checking and registration for ACAP, is done at major entry points on treks from Bhesishar, Tal or Chame and Jomsom town.

08: What are the main religions of the mountain people?

The main tribes of Annapurna Himalayas are Gurung, and Manang the hill tribe follows Tibetan Buddhism. Trekkers can witness that every houses adorned with a Buddhist prayer flags. The Gurung also follows an ancient cult of Bonpo a pre-Buddhism, and Shamanism. Worship of nature and mountain spirit.

Gurung are the main hill tribes of Annapurna and Lamjung Himal areas and around district of Gorkha also. Around Kaligandaki from Jomsom to Tatopani, populated by Thakali people follows Buddhist religion. At Ghorepani to Ulleri are Poon from Magar tribes interwoven to both Hindu and Buddhist religions.
