Overview

Tamang Heritage Trail Trekking is new and different from other various normal trekking adventures. This journey leads to scenic and cultural walks around the high Himalayan country within the Langtang and Ganesh Himal ranges. Far from the main popular route of Langtang Valley, this trail is seldom ventured by only a few travelers. Makes the short adventures of a week more special and unique than most trekking destinations.

Tamang Heritage Trail Trekking is more of an exploration from one lovely village to another. The warm traditional harmony of local cultures and within the shadow of the Himalayan snow-capped peaks. The Tamang are the 5th populated hill tribes of Nepal, following similar customs of Buddhism age-old heritage like of Tibet.

The journey begins with drives from Kathmandu to reach the cooler hilly areas of Rasuwa district at Syabrubesi village-town. From here starts the impression of Tamang cultures and traditional way of life and customs of Buddhism.

The walk follows higher to the large Tamang village of Gatlang, an exciting place to soak into local culture. As well as with warm and lively hospitality of the village communities, the walk follows next to Tatopani. The villages with natural hot springs existed before the big earthquakes of 2015. However, this village still retains its ancient heritage and traditional way of farm activities and raising livestock.

The adventure then heads close en route to Nepal and Tibet borders as our route diverts. Heading for a climb to the scenic hilltop of Nagethali offers a spectacular panorama of the Himalayan range of peaks.

Slowly, the wonderful trek ends with a downhill to the nice villages of Thuman and Briddim. Then the walk completes upon reaching Syabrubesi for a scenic drive to Kathmandu. After a mesmerizing time around Tamang Heritage Trail Trekking.

The Best Seasons

The best seasons for Tamang Heritage Trail Treks, are spring and autumn.
Spring starts from March to May, most days are sunny but can get cloudy in the late afternoon. Chances of light snowfall with cold mornings and nighttime at above 3,000 m. Lovely times with wildflowers in seasonal bloom, especially the rhododendrons of various colors, en route Langtang Valley.

The next best season is autumn/fall, which begins in September and ends in November. One of the high seasons for views and pleasant walks, sunny days most of the time in autumn. But gets dark soon, due to short sunlight hours, cold morning, and late afternoon till nighttime. Could get snowfall from Gatlang Village and at Nagethali high hill sometimes.

The route and trails around Tamang Heritage Trail Treks

The route is straightforward with a signpost at each junction of the mid-ways, so there will be no confusion. The trails are nicely laid and good for walking all the way from Syabrubesi to the end of walks. Includes steep uphill for short hour, and with gradual winding path through lovely forest. The highest spot of the journey is Nagethali Hill, from here onwards with downhill with few short ups. As well as with gradual wide path en route back to Syabrubesi village on the road-head.

Itinerary

Day 01

Drive to Syabrubesi 1,470 m via Dhunche Town 1,900 - 06 hours.

Enjoy an exciting drive to start the trek from the town-village of Syabrubesi, an Interesting overland journey. Heading through nice farm areas, villages and towns reaching higher cooler hills at Dhunche Town. The headquarters of Rasuwa district around Langtang Himal region. As well as the entrance of Langtang National Park, from here downhill to Syabrubesi at the end of motorable road. Check into a nice lodge for first overnight around Langtang Himal region and the Tamang community.
Day 02

Trek to Gatlang village 2,235 m - 06 hrs.

From Syabrubesi, after good breakfast, first day walk follows towards west, avoiding main road. Then towards the old trekking routes, the walk continues past farm fields and into rhododendron and pine forest. After the climb for a short hour, then reaching Gatlang village, and transfer into a Home Stay cottage. The Home Stay program, managed by the village community to honor the guest with traditional cultures of the Tamang people. Gatlang is largely populated by the Tamang with a distinct culture and customs. The Tamang with their own language, interwoven to religious practices, deeply rooted in Tibetan Buddhism. Enjoy the overnight and soak into impressive culture amidst friendly locals.
Day 03

Trek to Tatopani- 2,380 m-06 hrs.

After a wonderful stop at Gatlang observing the interesting cultures, morning bidding farewell. The walk leads down to Thangbuchet, located by the river for possible lunch stops. Afternoon walk across a hanging bridge with few hours of uphill walk to Tatopani village. Check into a nice simple lodge for overnight, the village name Tatopani means ‘hot water’ in Nepali. At present the hot natural spring source is dry, damaged by earthquakes of May 2015. The name Tatopani still exists, an interesting village for short walk to observe the local farm activities with grand views.
Day 04

Trek to Thuman 2,235 m via Nag-Thali Hill at 3,300 m-06 hrs.

Depart from lodge in Tatopani village, the walk today leads to the highest point of the journey. The morning trail follows to with steep climb for few hours to Brimdang village. Having time to enjoy refreshing lunch break, and then climb continues to the top of Nagethali Hill. Located at 3,300m/10,826 ft. high offers spectacular panorama of the Central Himalayan peaks. After an exciting views downhill to Thuman, another lovely Tamang village for overnight stop. The villagers, will entertain guest with folk song and dances, after enjoying a lovely nice local meal for dinner.
Day 05

Trek to Briddim village 2,228 m -05 hrs.

From Thuman walk towards Briddim village, the trail follows along winding gradual path. Then descends to Timure, a large farm village. Situated close to the direction to Nepal and Tibet/ China borders. Having time for lunch stop, and then walks continues to Briddim. A nice Tamang village, for overnight halt in the comfort of a Home Stay. It’s a great wonderful experience, the accommodation, lodgings, and food are prepared at each houses on a rotational basis. As this management benefits the whole community with the services of a Home- Stay programs.
Day 06

Trek to Syabrubesi on the road-head- 05 hrs.

Morning from Briddim Village walk downhill on winding path the trail follows along the river banks. Enjoy the last day of walking to Syabrubesi, for the final overnight stops around the Tamang Villages of Rasuwa and Langtang Himal region.
Day 07

Drive to Kathmandu afternoon free at leisure.

Morning as early as possible having nice breakfast, then depart for an exciting Overland Journey. The drive follows winding ups to Dhunche Town, and then downhill towards lower warmer farm areas. Reaching a large town of Trisuli Bazaar for lunch. Afternoon a good drive of few hours to Kathmandu, and back to your hotel. Rest of the afternoon enjoy relaxing with fond memories of Tamang Heritage Trail Trekking.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are prepared during the trek. The meals are basic, but will give you enough energy for your appetite. Fruit is also available after each meal.

How difficult is the walk on Tamang Heritage Trail?

A moderate walk with some steep ups to reach Gatlang and Tatopani Villages, and then on pleasant gradual trail. The last steep climb is up to Nagethali hilltop for some hours. Rest of the trail of gradual pleasant walks back to town-village of Syabrubesi.

Is Tamang Heritage Trail a popular destination?

Tamang Heritage Trail is not popular like Langtang Valley or Annapurna and Everest Trekking regions. But it is slowly getting attention for people with interest in local cultures. As this trek provides all from culture to scenic views of the Himalayas. In near future it will be certainly a popular destination, as this route has been recently opened as Tamang Heritage Trail.

What can we expect on this trek?

A lovely country walk through beautiful forest lined with tall rhododendrons, pines and fir trees. Daily views of snow peaks with local fascinating cultures of the Tamang people the highlanders of Mid-West Central Himalayas.

As well as of Langtang Himal region, where trekkers can enjoy fantastic landscapes and Himalayan peaks views. Along with local fascinating cultures, the trail to expect it leads to much uphill with few gradual path. As well a steep climb to the highest point at Nagethali Hilltop with long downhill walks. Are there facilities for electricity, internets and WI-FI?

All lodges and Home-Stay cottage on overnight stops, have electricity facilities either run by Hydro or solar power. Trekkers can charge their electronic items on paying extra for charging each gadgets. Some lodges offer free Wi-Fi and Internet services while few places might charge extra. But the connection in some places can be disturbing and takes time to run the service either in long distance call or using the internets.

How are the lodge facilities and foods on this treks?

Simply the best that one can expect around the mountainous and hilly region around Himalayas. The lodge facilities much better at Syabrubesi and Gatlang as well in Thuman and Briddim. Most places provide rooms with common bathe and toilets, an extra charge for using hot showers. However, the rooms are neat and cozy the dining have fireplace to warm the rooms while you enjoy the meals.

The foods depending upon the standard of the lodge, but most lodge restaurants provide long list of food menu. From Set menu or La Carte, including all types of refreshments to enjoy. But the most common meals are Nepali Dal Bhat with seasonal vegetable mild curries. As well as Noodle with soup or fried including Tibetan bread from wheat, barley or millets flour.

How fit one should be for this adventure?

Requires all trekkers to be suitably physically fit and in good health, to take the challenge walking steeps and downhill’s. When planning and booking this trip, one should need outdoor exercise from walking, jogging. Or any other good physical exercise for an hour on daily basis, and checking your health.
