Overview

Everest Three High Passes Trekking leads to unique adventures around the high valleys of scenic Khumbu. In the close shadow of mighty Himalayan peaks with towering Mt. Everest, follows you throughout the treks. An opportunity for trekkers to explore both sides from the east to west end of the Khumbu Valley.

Where scenery of white peaks remains constant on daily walks, with the warm traditional hospitality of the native Sherpa. The charm and beauty of this adventure en route to Everest Three High Passes covers all the main highlights. What Khumbu and Everest have to offer, with fabulous panoramic views, makes you feel in high spirits in the end.

The adventure starts on moderate winding routes with few ups and downs following the Dudh Koshi River. As well as crossing exciting bridges from one lovely village to another to reach the high Namche Bazaar. A wonderful spot and a large village with the size of a small town with good hotels and lodges. Also the perfect height for acclimatization before crossing the high passes of Khumbu and Everest.

After Namche Bazaar on the scenic trail to beautiful Tengboche, located amidst a lovely green forest with the majestic monastery. Tengboche stands atop facing a panorama of Everest and surrounding giant peaks, with a tour of the monastery of cultural interest. The walk follows towards the higher ridges to enter Imjatse Valley at Dingboche and Chukung. From here onwards begins our true adventure to cross all, three high passes. As well as visiting the famous Everest Base Camp with a climb to the top of Kalapathar. The highest point of the journey and a famous views point for close views of Mt. Everest.

On completing the first phase and highlights of the adventures, then towards the picturesque Gokyo Valley of lakes via Cho-La Pass.

The second-high pass of the treks leads to a steep climb to cross over Cho-La Pass. The dramatic scenery of the towering white peaks makes the climb more exciting and enjoyable. After crossing Cho-La Pass, reach the scenic valley of Gokyo with its serene turquoise-colored glacial lakes. At Gokyo, explore its charming surroundings with a climb to Gokyo-Ri for the best views of the world’s highest peaks.

Then leaving the beautiful Gokyo Valley towards our last and final pass of the adventures to cross Renjo-La. Although a tough and steep climb to reach the top, rewards with alluring views of Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu peaks. From the Renjo-La Pass, a long downhill walk to reach the western end of Khumbu Valley at Thame village. Thame is located on a windswept valley with an old monastery, from Theme on the main trail to Namche Bazaar. The walk finally concludes by reaching back at Lukla for a short scenic flight to Kathmandu.

On arrival in Kathmandu, our adventure completes, after a mesmerizing experience on Everest Three High Passes Trekking.

The Best Seasons

The best seasons for Everest Three High Passes Treks, are spring and autumn. Spring starts from March to May, most days are sunny but can get cloudy in the late afternoon. Chances of light snowfall with cold mornings and nighttime after Namche Bazaar. But beautiful with wildflowers in seasonal bloom, especially rhododendrons of various colors, around the Tengboche Monastery areas.

The next best season is autumn/fall, which begins in September and ends in November. One of the high seasons for views and pleasant walks, sunny days most of the time in autumn. But gets dark soon, due to short sunlight hours, cold morning, and late afternoon till nighttime. Could get snowfall from Namche Bazaar onwards sometimes.

The route and trails around Everest Three High Passes Treks

The route is straightforward with a signpost at each junction of the mid-ways, so there will be no confusion. The trails are nicely laid and good for walking until Lobuche, from Lobuche to Gorakshep and Everest base camp. Can slightly changes of walking path, due to seasonal avalanches and rock falls, but nothing dangerous taking slow. Especially on rocky trails of big boulders with moraine of rocks, ice and glaciers, on crossing passes.

Including en route to Everest Base Camp. Few short uphill’s and downhill, but on leaving Dudh Koshi River, steep uphill on a winding trail to Namche Bazaar. As well as crossing suspension bridges over the same rivers a couple of times. From Namche Bazaar to Dingboche and crossing high Khongma-La Pass to Everest base camp is on rocky glaciated path with rise in altitude.

Itinerary

Day 01

Fly to Lukla 2, 846m and trek to Phakding 2,645m - 04 hrs

Morning as time for flight to Lukla, transfer to Kathmandu domestic airport. After checking in and through security, then board in a small aircraft for sweeping scenic flight to Lukla. During air-borne spectacular views of Himalayan range of peaks with Mt. Everest and Nepal’s beautiful country landscapes. After a short flight of 30 to 35 minutes landing at Lukla’s Tenzing & Hillary Airport, after claiming the baggage. Follow the guide to start the trek through Lukla town past shops, stores and restaurants. On the downhill to Dudh Koshi River past serval villages to reach overnight stop in Phakding village.
Day 02

Trek to Namche Bazaar 3,440m / 11, 350 feet - 06 hrs

From Phakding a long day walk to Namche Bazaar, due to rapid rise in altitude. Morning walk follows above the Dudh Koshi River and crossing bridge with up to Monjo village. To enter Sagarmatha National Park, listed in World Heritage Sites, Sagarmatha a name for Everest in Nepal. For the Sherpa is Chomolungma similar to Tibetan name and language. From here cross the bridge to Jorsalle for lunch stop. After lunch walk on the river bed within forest of rhododendrons and pine trees and cross a high bridge. From here on undulating winding uphill to reach Namche Bazaar for two overnights stop. Namche Bazaar a size of a town with colorful nice houses offers many good lodge accommodation and best food.
Day 03

At Namche 3,440m / 11, 350 feet for acclimatization and short scenic hike.

A perfect place and height for rest and acclimatization day, before heading higher altitude. At Namche enjoy a short hike and exercise for acclimatization, the best is to high above Namche Bazaar. Where national park headquarters located with an interesting museum, offers grand views of Mt. Everest. Includes Lhotse, Nuptse and beautiful peak of Ama Dablam, Tharmasarku and Kwangde peaks. Options for hike to Everest View Hotel, first luxury hotel in Khumbu as well listed in Guinness Book of Record. As the world’s highest luxury hotel at 3,800 m high. Rest of the day after lunch explore the town of Namche Bazaar.
Day 04

Trek to Tengboche 3,867m - 05 hrs

Enjoy the day walk from Namche Bazaar on scenic winding pleasant trail with glorious views of Everest. As well other adjoining snow peaks the down to Imjatse River at Phunki Tenga for lunch stop. Afternoon a steep climbs up through lovely forest to Tengboche and its colorful monastery of great religious interest. After a good climb of few hours reach on top of a small plateau at scenic location at Tengboche. Where you can enjoy the panorama of Mt. Everest and series of peaks, that surrounds Tengboche. Located amidst lovely forest surroundings, overnights in its nice simple lodge. Options to walk further down to Deboche another small settlement with few nice lodges.
Day 05

Trek to Dingboche 4,410m - 05 hrs

Enjoy the morning superb views of snow peaks, and then downhill to cross a bridge. From the bridge onwards the tree lines drop for short bush of junipers then reaching Pangboche. The last permanent village before Everest base camp, walk heads with slow up to Somare for lunch stop. Afternoon can get quite windy and cold as the height gains to reach Dingboche for two overnights stops.
Day 06

Rest day in Dingboche 4,410m for acclimatization and short excursion.

Dingboche a nice settlement with many fine lodges, situated within scenic Imjatse Valley. Stands below North Face of Ama Dablam and south of Lhotse and Nuptse mountains with views of famous Island Peak. At Dingboche options for hike on top Nakarjung hill for best panorama of surrounding scenery of snow peaks. Includes views of Mt. Makalu towards east, a good acclimatization hike, afternoon at leisure.
Day 07

Trek to Chukung 4, 740m -04 hrs

Morning from Dingboche a short morning walks on moderate path with short steep climb to reach Chukung. A small and last settlement, around east of Khumbu and Imjatse Valley, which on route to Island Peak and towards Khongma-La. Afternoon enjoy rest after lunch, saving energy for next day long walk to Lobuche crossing the high Khongma-La Pass.
Day 08

Trek to Lobuche 4,960m via Khoma-La Pass 5,535m-08 hrs

Starting early morning from Chukung, walk leads above Imjatse Valley. Then the route diverts towards a hidden gully in between Nuptse and Nakarjung high ridges. The walk follows on rocky path with steep climb to the top of Khongma-La, the highest pass of the adventure. The pass is enclosed by Pokalde Peak and Mehara / Khongma Peak with great wall of Nuptse peak. From the pass a long descend to cross over Khumbu glacier with short steep and down to Lobuche for overnight stop.
Day 09

Trek to Everest base camp 5,364m via Gorakshep 5,180m and walk back to Gorakshep.

Today walk towards Everest base camp, one of the main highlights. Start the walk early morning after breakfast, following towards north with short climb to reach a rocky moraine above Khumbu glacier. Then slowly the trail follows down to a wide sandy field, where Gorakshep is located. After a short rest continue walk heading east, the reaching Everest base camp. Standing at the bottom of towering snow peaks of Lhotse, Nuptse, Lingtrin and Pumori, with close to Khumbu icefall and glaciers. After achieving the goal, return walk to Gorakshep for overnight stop, before heading towards our second pass to cross Cho-La.
Day 10

Climb Kalapathar 5,643m / 18,514 feet, trek to Dzongla 4, 750m-05 hrs

Early morning hike before breakfast a steep climb of near two hours to reach on top of famous Kalapathar. The highest point of the adventure facing close views of Mt. Everest and surrounding giant peaks. After a great adventurous morning climb descent to Gorakshep for breakfast and packing. From Gorakshep downhill to Lobuche and then our route diverts to a hidden corner at Dzongla. A small settlement with few nice Lodges, located near to the base of Cho-La Pass with grand views of Cholatse and Taboche peaks.
Day 11

Cross Cho-La pass 5,420m descent to Thaknag 4,750m - 08 hours

An early morning start walk on gradual path for a while to reach at the base of Cho-La. From here a steep climb for few hours to the top of Cho-La, the pass marked with rocks cairn. As well as Buddhist prayer flags, the pass is well hidden by the Cholatse peak. From Cho-La Pass enjoy views of Cho-Oyu, Lobuche East and West with Nirekha peak, head downhill to the bottom of the pass. Reaching Thaknag, a small settlement with few simple good lodges for overnight, located at the east end of Gokyo Valley.
Day 12

Trek to Gokyo Lake 4,780m - 04 hrs

A short day walk to enjoy, towards Gokyo Valley and its lakes, the trail leads to pleasant hike for an hour or more to reach the first and then the second lakes. Then finally ending the morning reaching at the 3rd main lakes of Gokyo, also called as Dudh Pokhari. The lodges are located just above the main Lake, check into a nice lodge for lunch and overnight stops.
Day 13

Cross Renjo-La 5, 360m and trek to Lungden 4,380m - 06 hrs

The adventures start at early morning, to cross the last the third pass of the journey. The trail follows south past the main Gokyo Lake close to the foothill of Gokyo-Ri, then the climb begins. Heading for a steep haul for some hours to reach Renjo-La, a scenic pass to enjoy the views. From the pass grand view of Mt. Everest, Lhotse and Makalu with Cho-Oyu, includes superb views of Kwangde towards south. After crossing the last and final pass of the adventure descend takes you to Lungden, a small settlement with few simple lodges.
Day 14

Trek to Thame 3,880m - 06 hrs

Feeling good and easy, after crossing the three high passes, from Lungden a long downhill to Thame village. Located on the west of Khumbu and Namche Bazaar a quant village, seldom visited. The village sits on a scenic valley with an old monastery on the high ridge above Thame village. Check into a nice fine lodge, after an adventure completing all three high passes.
Day 15

Trek to Monjo 2,840m via Namche Bazaar - 06 hrs

Enjoy the morning glory with grand views of Kwangde peaks, and then start walk downhill to a river. After crossing a bridge, a short climb to reach a gradual path to Thamo village. Following on a nice winding trail through cool shade of forest reaching Namche Bazaar. After a refreshing rest, start the afternoon walk down to Dudh Koshi River Valley. The walk continues with short climb to National Park exit post, then reach Monjo for overnight stop.
Day 16

Trek to Lukla 2, 846m - 04 hours

Last day walk of the adventure follows down to cross a long bridge, and then reaching Phakding. After Phakding on a gradual winding trail with last final climb to Lukla for lunch and last overnight night around Khumbu.
Day 17

Fly from Lukla 2860m to Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.

As time for flight to Kathmandu, getting ready by 6 a.m. transfer to Lukla air Terminal. Waiting for the plane to arrive from Kathmandu, and then get on board in the small aircraft for scenic flight. On reaching Kathmandu airport transfer for a short drive back to your hotel, rest of the day at leisure.

How difficult is Everest Three High Passes Trek?

A moderate to adventurous with steep ups and downhills, one of the best and perfect walks around the Himalayas. Trekkers must be aware that Nepal and Himalayan landscapes are all ups and downhills. The only flat land is in the southern Terai belt of Nepal, walking slow and steady will overcome the difficulty.

The walk is straight forward without much difficulties, as long one takes it slow and steady. The only tough about this treks is the gain in altitude, but walking slow and having enough drinks. It is the best way as precaution against the problem of the altitude gain. Rest of the route is straightforward on daily walks to each overnights stops.

Is Everest Three Passes a popular trekking route?

Everest Three High Passes is not popular as Everest Base Camp, but one of the most scenic adventure to experience. Due to its fabulous and landscapes scenery.

But the connection in some places can be disturbing and takes time to run the service either in long distance call or using the internets.

How are the lodge facilities and foods on this treks?

Simply the best that one can expect around the mountainous and hilly region around Himalayas. The lodge facilities much better in Namche, Phakding and Lukla to Gokyo with options for attached bath and toilets.

Most lodges provide common bathe and toilets with extra charge for using hot showers. However, the rooms are neat and cozy the dining have fireplace to warm the rooms while you enjoy the meals. The foods depending upon the standard of the lodge, but most lodge restaurants provide long list of food menu. From Set menu or La Carte, including all types of refreshments to enjoy, as well some lodge provides fresh bakery products also. The only simple and basic accommodation is in Dzongla, Thaknag and Lungden, due to the nature of its remoteness and isolation than other main trekking trails.

Requires all trekkers to be suitably physically fit and in good health, to take the challenge walking steeps and downhills.
