Overview

Larke Peak Climbing and Manaslu Circuit Trekking a marvelous adventure around Nepal’s Far North Mid-West Himalayas. The higher Manaslu Valley around remote corners of the Gorkha district, one time it remained a forbidden country.
Due to its close border with Tibet, China, after decades of isolation, then opened its doors in 1992. At present, all the trekkers and adventurers can witness the beautiful and scenic Manaslu Valley with its impressive colorful culture.

The Larke Peak Climbing and Manaslu Circuit Trekking remain restricted areas to control the mass influx of trekkers. To conserve its pristine environment as it were for past centuries, a fascinating high land with beautiful landscapes. The walk follows from lower warm farm areas to cool hills, then reaches the scenic Upper Manaslu.

The route follows through the lovely villages of Jagat, Namrung, and Lo-Gaon to reach Sama-Gaon. The main villages of the Upper Manaslu, as well as the main junction en route to Mt. Manaslu base camp. As well as en route to the Tibet border and towards the high Larke-La Pass, including the Larke Peak.

After spending an extra day in Sama-Gaon for acclimatization and a short hike to scenic viewpoints. The adventure continues to the end of the Manaslu Valley rim at Dharmasala or Larke Phedi. Which is also the base camp for the climb to stunning Larke Peak towers high at 6,249m/20,621 feet.

Larke Peak seldom ventured for adventurous climbing due to its technical difficulty in reaching the summit. But having flexible days with good climbing gear makes the climb much more accessible to enjoy the adventure. The grade of the climb ‘TD’, means high with “Technical Difficulties”. The grading from French and Swiss Alpine Climbing Classification Systems leads to rock and ice vertical faces.

Where fixed ropes are necessary from the start of the climb to the summit as well as on descent. The Larke Peak summit rewards a mind-blowing panorama of the surroundings towering snow mountain range. Includes the Manaslu range of peaks, with Annapurna II and III, IV. As well views of Damodar Himal towards the north extend to Himlung in the west with Ganesh Himal towards the east.

After the exciting climb to the summit of Larke Peak with fabulous views, then on the return journey. Heading up to cross the Larke-Pass and then down to Manang areas, at Dharapani village. The Best Seasons

The best seasons for Larke Peak Climbing & Manaslu Circuit Treks, are spring and autumn. Spring starts from March to May, most days are sunny but can get cloudy in the late afternoon. Chances of light snowfall with cold mornings and nighttime at above 2,000 m. Lovely times with wildflowers in seasonal bloom, especially the rhododendrons of various colors, en route Manaslu Valley.

The next best season is autumn/fall, which begins in September and ends in November. One of the high seasons for views and pleasant walks, sunny days most of the time in autumn. But gets dark soon, due to short sunlight hours, cold morning, and late afternoon till nighttime. Could get snowfall from Namrung, Sama-Gaon to high Larke-La Pass sometimes.

The route and trails en route to Larke Peak & Manaslu Circuit Treks

The route is straightforward with a signpost at each junction of the mid-ways, so there will be no confusion. The trails are nicely laid and good for walking all the way to Upper Manaslu. Includes steep uphill for short hour, and with gradual winding path through lovely forest. Crossing over exciting bridges and with long downhill, after reaching the highest overnight stops at Dharmasala.

The trail after Lo Gaon and Sama-Gaon to Dharmasala and on top Larke-La Pass with steep climb and touch of high altitude. But, rest of the walks is on downhill to Dharapani Village at the end of trekking. Dharmasala and Larke Phedi is also the base camp of Larke Peak, located on a glaciated valley. The climb to Larke Peak High Camp is within rocky moraine of ice, snow and glaciers.

Day 04: Trek to Jagat 1,340 m via Dovan 1,070 m-07 hours.

Day 05: Trek to Deng 1,860 m via Philim village-06 hours.

Day 16: Extra day at base camp to collect climbing and camping equipment.

Day 17: Trek to Bhimphedi/Bhimthang 3,590 m -08 hours. Crossing over Larke-La Pass 5,106m.

Day 18: Trek to Gho 2,535 m- 04 hrs.

Day 19: Trek to Dharapani village 1,820 m, drive to Bhesishar 800m-06 hrs.

Day 20: Drive to Kathmandu-05 hours.

Itinerary

Day 01

Arrival in Kathmandu 1,320 m and transfer to hotel.

Arriving in Kathmandu and Nepal International Airport, our guide and staff receives you for a short transfer to your hotels. Then check into your nice rooms at given time meet with other trekking members for trek briefing. Regarding Larke Peak Climbing and Manaslu Circuit trekking with dos and don’ts as well information on Responsible Tourism. Evening a group welcome dinner in a nice Nepali Restaurants, a great introduction to Nepali foods and cultures.
Day 02

In Kathmandu with optional sightseeing tour and trek preparations.

In Kathmandu free day to enjoy individual activities and preparation for Larke Peak Climb & Manaslu Circuit treks. Interested people with options for tour around Kathmandu and Nepal famous sites and landmarks.
Day 03

Drive to Machha Khola 900 m / 2,952 feet approx. 07 hours.

Start the morning with early breakfast for a long and exciting drive to the starting point of Manaslu Circuit Trek. The drive leads on the main country highway, and then diverts towards Dhading areas to reach low warmer farm villages. Reaching Gorkha district at Arughat Town, then following the Budhi-Gandaki River past Soti Khola and then reach Machha Khola. Where drive ends and the starting point of the adventure, staying overnight in a nice simple lodge in Maccha-Khola. A moderate size farm village, the name Machha Khola means a fishing stream.
Day 04

Trek to Jagat 1,340 m via Dovan 1,070 m-07 hours.

On leaving Maccha-Khola, the morning walk follows Buri Gandaki River upstream past small villages of Khorla Besi, after few stops walk on winding trail to Tatopani a place with hot spring. Tatopani means hot water or natural hot springs, located in the midst of a forest. After a pleasant stop walk to Dovan and Yaruphant, after crossing a bridge a short climb to Jagat village for overnight stop. A moderate size village with typical Nepali style houses with many shops and lodges. Jagat Village is the starting point to Upper Manaslu around the Restricted Areas in Nepal. Including the Manaslu Conservation Areas till you reach other side in Manang at Dharapani the end of trek.
Day 05

Trek to Deng 1,860 m via Philim village-06 hours.

From Jagat village walk heads higher gaining elevation slowly around the cooler area, leaving the rice terraces. Then reaching Sirdibas Bazaar, a nice small farm village, and then climb to cross a small bridge to Nagjet. To reach Philim village a nice large farm village and populated by the Gurung the tribes of mid hills. Slowly walk heads uphill reaching a large rocky hilltop walk into a bamboo forest then reaching Dyang village for overnight stop.
Day 06

Trek to Namrung 2, 660 m-06 hours.

Morning walks leads to cross Budhi Gandaki River with a climb to a small settlement at Bhi. From here walk into a forest to another lovely farm village of Prok. The walk continues encountering Buddhist monuments on reaching overnight stop at Namrung. A lovely village with first views of Manaslu giant snow peaks.
Day 07

Trek to Lo-Gaon 3, 180 m-05 hours.

Start the morning walk with scenic views towards upper areas of Manaslu, the trail leads along Budhi-Gandaki River. Cross a bridge to reach the small farm villages with nice, and well maintained terraced of millets, wheat’s and barley. The walk head north with grand views of snow peaks, past Banjham, Lihi and Sho a small village. Few hour of good walk to reach Lo-Gaon village for overnight halt, this village also called as Lo-Bazaar. At Lo-Gaon in the comfort of a nice lodge, having time to explore the village and Ribung monastery.
Day 08

Trek to Sama-Gaon 3, 500 m /11, 480 feet-06 hours.

After Lo village with views of striking sunrise over towering Mt. Manaslu, walk today is quite long. But beautiful views makes the walk interesting and exciting, the trail follows on the Upper Manaslu routes to reach Sama-Gaon. A major villages of Upper Manaslu where Trans Himalaya Salt Trade Route passed through the areas of Sama Gaon. At Sama-Gaon after getting organized in a nice lodge with time to explore the village of strong Tibetan culture.
Day 09

At Sama-Gaon rest day for acclimatization and excursion.

After days of trekking, a rest day for acclimatization and to explore it scenic viewpoints. Interested people can enjoy hike to Birendra Lake and visit the old Pungyen Gompa. Which is en route Manaslu Base Camp, amidst towering snow peaks and glaciers.
Day 10

Trek to Samdo 3,875 m -05 hours.

From Sama Gaon, after a pleasant rest start the morning with easy pace takes short hours to Samdo village. The trail follows on the windswept plain, in the shadow of towering peaks, a gradual walk for few hours. Then climb up to a small plateau, where a large village of Samdo located for overnight halt. Located en route Tibet and Nepal borders, and towards our next day direction to Dharmasala and Larke-La Pass.
Day 11

Trek to Dharmasala 4, 450 m /14, 596 feet-04 hours.

Rising with glorious morning views of stunning peaks, after breakfast a short day walk to Larke Phedi / Dharmasala. For last overnight around Manaslu and Gorkha district, the walk follows to cross few cold streams. Then on gradual path on river bed to reach at Dharmasala, means a shelter for travelers. Also known as Larke Phedi, means the bottom of the pass, reaching Dharmasala in the comfort of a nice simple lodge. Enjoy lunch, afternoon at leisure to relax saving the energy for the big climb to Larke Peak.
Day 12

At Dharmasala also a Larke Peak Base Camp.

At Dharmasala or Larke Phedi, which is also the base camp of Larke Peak. The mountain is within a close distance of few hours walk and climb to reach the High Camp of Larke Peak. At Dharmasala and Larke Peak base camp, having time for preparation, as well as checking the gear.
Day 13

Trek and climb to High Camp at 5,050 m-04 hrs.

From Dharmasala, Larke Base Camp, a fresh morning climb reaching across another base of Nike Peak. The climb continues crossing icy streams, then head south where our High Camp is established. First overnight halt in a tents, includes all camping equipment with cook and kitchen staff. Having separate unit of kitchen department, to serve good hygienic meals cooked in a friendly environment. All meals are cooked and prepared in kerosene or cooking gas stove. The High Camp is set beneath the towering Larke Peak at 5,050 m high, after getting organized in camping. Have time for climbing preparations, the guide will prepare necessary arrangements for the big climb. Likewise, fixing ropes and pitching snow bars where necessary on technical section of the climb.
Day 14

Two days for Larke Peak Summit Climbing 6,249 m / 20, 621 feet. Return to Dharmasala the base camp.

Reserved two days for the climb from High Camp, due to the nature of technical effort required to reach the summit of stunning Larke Peak. The climb begins after good preparations, where our guide will make the route safe and accessible. The climb starts heading towards a strenuous steep ups, encountering some technical sections, using fixed ropes for all members. As the climb progress over rocks, ice and snow ledge then reach the Larke Peak summit. Having to catch the breathing and then enjoy spectacular panorama of Manaslu Himalayas group of peaks. The view includes North Peak 7,154 m, Boudha and Himal-Chuli, Manaslu with Himlung Himal, as well peaks of Annapurna Himalaya. After a great challenging climb, enjoying the breathtaking views descend to the base camp at Dharmasala. Carrying and packing all the equipment from the High Camp, as well as cleaning the camp. Leaving nothing but the footprints, at Dharmasala enjoy the comfort of a nice lodge accommodation. After a most daring and exciting adventure to the summit of Larke Peak.
Day 15

Day 16

Extra day at base camp to check the climbing, camping equipment.

Another free day at Dharmasala or Larke base camp to pull up the lost energy from the tough climb. The extra day allows to collect all the camping and climbing equipment. As well having rest for the climb to cross Larke-La Pass to reach on the other side at Manang areas.
Day 17

Trek to Bhimphedi 3, 590 m via Larke-La Pass 5,106 m -08 hours.

Adventure starts early at the break of dawn, having good breakfast and carrying packed lunch for the long day walks. The trail follows to a steep climb with closes views of Cheo Danda and Larke Peak. After some hours of tough climbing and finally reach on top of Larke-La Pass. The highest point of the adventures, rewards spectacular panorama of peaks that surrounds you on top Larke-La Pass. After an exciting morning with dramatic scenery of an arrays of snow peaks, head downhill to Cheo Danda. Then reaching a small place of Larcia and then walk on the foot of Larke-La Pass. On reaching the base at Phedi around Manang district. A slow walk on gradual path to Bhimphedi, also called Bhimthang, located on a beautiful location. Surrounded with lovely forest, enjoy the overnight in a nice lodge, after a long and tough day.
Day 18

Trek to Gho 2,535 m- 04 hrs.

A leisure morning along with the views from Bhimphedi, a short and pleasant walk to Gho. Walk today is quite short, after a long day trek of previous day, the trail leads downhill within dense tree lines. Slowly the morning walks ends reaching Gho for overnight halt and lunch.
Day 19

Trek to Dharapani village 1,820 m, drive to Bhesishar 800m-06 hrs.

Today the last day walk of the adventure, enjoy the pleasant long walk downhill to Dharapani village. Start the morning walk into lovely woods then reaching a nice village of Tilje. Possible lunch stops. From Tilje a short climb across the bridge above Masrsyangdi River to Dharapani village. After completing the walk in the afternoon time, then board in a local jeep for exciting drive down to Lamjung area. The drive leads beyond Manang district at Tal, to reach Chamje, Jagat and down to Syange. Reaching around lower warm paddy farm villages following the Masrsyangdi River past Bulbule and Khudi village. Then drive ends on entering a large interesting town at Bhesishar, the headquarters of Lamjung district. Arriving late afternoon, and check into a nice hotel or lodge and enjoy a good last dinner and celebration. After a successful climb of Larke Peak and trekking around Manaslu Himalayas.
Day 20

Drive to Kathmandu and transfer to hotel -08 hours.

After a good breakfast, the drive from Bhesishar on a good road to reach Dumre town. From here on the main road of Kathmandu and Pokhara Highway, the drive continues to follow Trisuli River for few hours. Then climbs on winding up to reach Kathmandu valley, and entering the bustling city. On reaching in the heart of Kathmandu city transfer to your hotel, rest of the afternoon at leisure.

How difficult is Manaslu Circuit Trek and Larke Peak Climb?

A moderate walk with some steep ups to reach high Manaslu Valley. On reaching Lo-Gaon the walk is pleasant on gradual trail to Sama-Gaon, as well heading towards Dharmasala at the end of the valley rim. The hardest one can experience is the long climb on top Larke-La pass. Then with long stretch of downhill after the pass to reach Bhimthang or Bhimphedi. Rest of the walk on downhill to the end of the trek at Dharapani Village. As for the climb of Larke Peak, all trekkers should be physically fit in sound health. Larke Peak climb leads to much technical skills, best if members have experience with basic knowledge of mountaineering.

Is Larke Peak a popular mountain?

Larke Peak due to remote and isolated location is not much popular than other trekking peaks in Nepal. But every good seasons of year, few groups of climbers often dare for the challenging climb to Larke Peak.

Are there facilities for electricity, internets and WI-FI?

All lodges on overnight stops, have electricity facilities either run by Hydro or solar power. Trekkers can charge their electronic items on paying extra for charging each gadgets. Some lodges offer free Wi-Fi and Internet services while few places might charge extra. But the connection in some places can be disturbing and takes time to run the service either in long distance call or using the internets.

How are the lodge facilities and foods on this treks?

Simply the best that one can expect around the mountainous and hilly region around Himalayas. The lodge facilities much better from Jagat to Samdo villages, and most lodges provide common bathe and toilets. An extra charge for using hot showers, the rooms are neat and cozy with large dining. Have fireplace to warm the rooms while you enjoy the meals. The foods depending upon the standard of the lodge, but most lodge restaurants provide long list of food menu. From Set menu or La Carte, including all types of refreshments to enjoy, as well some lodge provides fresh bakery products also. At Dharmasala the lodge is simple and basic with limited food menu, due to its remoteness and harsh climate condition.

But on climb of Larke Peak few overnights in tented camping. All foods are cooked and served by our expert camping cook. Serving good delicious meals to keep you fit for the climb of Larke Peak.

How fit one should be for this adventure?

Requires all trekkers to be suitably physically fit and in good health, to take the challenge walking steeps and downhill’s. When planning and booking this trip, one should need outdoor exercise from walking, jogging. Or any other good physical exercise for an hour on daily basis, and checking your health.
