Mardi Himal View Point Trekking, is also known as the ‘Other Sanctuary’. The name was christened by the early pioneers and explorers due to its close distance from the original Annapurna Sanctuary.
It is near to the west of Mardi Himal with a big drop of Modi River, that separates the two beautiful areas. An interesting and exciting trekking adventure of a week duration leads to awesome scenery. Overlooking the majestic peaks of the Annapurna massif Himalayan peaks with the Manaslu range towards the east.
But the most fascinating moment is standing close beneath the towering Machhapuchare Himal, the famed Fish Tail peak. Mardi Himal is a smaller trekking peak in Nepal, which is part and southern flank of Machhapuchare Himal.
In the early days, the Mardi Himal region, was almost forgotten, and only small groups of trekkers seldom ventured. But in the last few decades, Mardi Himal View Point areas or the other sanctuary has gained much attention. With more influx of trekkers each best seasons of the year, due to its picturesque location.
Due to its accessibility from Pokhara, to the starting and ending point of trekking. A trek is for a week, but one can extend it for a few days, depending on one fitness level. The walk involves drives to Dhampus, a lovely hill village where the trail follows along with the Himalayan panorama. Soon, the trek diverts from the main route to head north towards dense green forest.
As the walk continues above tree lines, then reaching wide open mountainous country at High Camp. The high overnight stop towards our highlight to Mardi View Point, the highest spot of the adventures.

The best seasons for this short and wonderful Mardi Himal View Point Treks, are spring and autumn. Spring starts from March to May, most days are sunny but can get cloudy in the late afternoon. Chances of light showers, with cold mornings and nighttime at above 2,000 m. But beautiful with wildflowers in seasonal bloom, especially rhododendrons of various colors, and different species from tall trees to bushes.
The next best season is autumn/fall, which begins in September and ends in November. One of the high seasons for views and pleasant walks, sunny days most of the time in autumn. But gets dark soon, due to short sunlight hours, cold morning, and late afternoon till nighttime. Could get snowfall from High Camp to Viewpoint top.
It will be exciting and great to enjoy Christmas and New Year Holidays. But freezing temperatures in the morning, afternoon, and night time, with bright starry night sky. Can get snowed in sometimes during the winter times.
In the last few years, the trek has been shortened for a few days due to the construction of a motorable road. The motor road has reached to Dhampus and at Siding village the ending point of trekking from Pokhara. Making the treks much easier to cover the whole treks in a week time frame.
The motorable road is quite rough on dirt, and mud tracks on leaving the main highway of Pokhara and Baglung. The walk takes you to a pleasant trail through lovely rhododendrons and pine forests to Low Camp. Then the tree line drop for sheer mountain wilderness with climb to High Camp and towards Mardi Viewpoint for the panorama of Himalayas. The rest of the walk with uphill and down to Siding villages. Approx. 57 km/35 miles of distance walking from Dhampus with a short circuit to end the trek at Siding village.
Day 01: Fly or drive to Pokhara 860 m (30 mins by air)-06 hours on road.
Day 02: Drive to Dhampus village 1,580 m, trek to Deurali 2,140m-05 hours.
Day 03: Trek to Forest camp 2,520 m-05 hrs.
Day 04: Trek to Badal Camp 3,345 m via Low Camp 2,970 m – 06 hrs.
Day 05: Trek to High Camp 3,700 m-03 hrs.
Day 06: Hike to Mardi Himal View Point 4,500 m and trek to Badal Camp.
Day 07: Trek to Siding village 1,750 m, and drive to Pokhara-07 hrs.
Day 08: Drive to Kathmandu-06 hours.
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are prepared during the trek. The meals are basic, but will give you enough energy for your appetite. Fruit is also available after each meal.
During the trek, we stay in lodges or teahouses. These are simple in nature, but fully equipped. Do not expect too much luxury.
It not as difficult as it looks, but one can expect much of uphill and downhill walks around the Himalayas. The walk leads to steep climb in some sections, but heeding slow with frequent stops. Makes the trek easy as well as enjoying the surrounding views, however in snow condition, can be quite strenuous. The longest and hard trek is on the last day to complete the journey at Siding village on downhill.
The whole treks cover Approx. 57 km/35-mile distance both ways, but from Pokhara a drive of 30 km/19 miles to Dhampus. From Siding village is about 35 km or 20-mile distance drives of few hours. The trek of less than a week duration of five nights and six days. But one can extend for more few days to enjoy the trek making shorter overnight stops.
A lovely country walk through beautiful forest lined with tall rhododendrons, pines and fir trees. Daily views of snow peaks, enjoying local impressive cultures of Gurung, the main tribes of Annapurna Himalayan region. The major expectation beside scenic scenery is walking steep uphill and downhill for few hours.
All villages and lodges on overnight stops, have electricity facilities either run by Hydro or Solar power. From Deurali onward most lodge en route provide electricity run by private solar power of the lodge. Trekkers can charge their electronic items on paying extra for charging each gadgets. Some lodges offer free Wi-Fi and Internet services while few places might charge extra. But the connection in some places can be disturbing and takes time to run the service either in long distance call or using the internets.
Simply the best that one can expect around the mountainous and hilly region around Himalayas. The lodge facilities much better in Deurali, but en route to Mardi Himal View Point. The lodge do not have attached bath and toilets, provide common bathe and toilets with extra charge for using hot showers.
However, the rooms are neat and cozy the dining have fireplace to warm the rooms while you enjoy the meals. The foods depending upon the standard of the lodge, but most lodge restaurants provide long list of food menu. From Set menu or La Carte, including all types of refreshments to enjoy.
Depending upon age groups and physical condition, can bring young children on this short pleasant treks depending upon the age. For infants who cannot walk, can be carried by extra porter on request of on the back of baby crib. Horse or pony is also available if one wants to ride instead of climbing uphill.
Mardi Himal and Annapurna region falls within ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Project) established in 1985 and was active from 1992. Trekkers have to obtain ACAP entrance ticket to enter all around Annapurna region.
The main tribes of Annapurna Himalayas are Gurung, the hill tribe follows Tibetan Buddhism. Trekkers can witness that every houses adorned with a Buddhist prayer flags. The Gurung also follows an ancient cult of Bonpo a pre-Buddhism, and Shamanism. Worship of nature and mountain spirits. Having their own festivals like Tamo Losar. A New Year similar year like Tibetan and Chinese with symbol of an animal and birds.
