Includes the exciting walks to the foot of the world’s number one Mt. Everest, standing amidst a towering giant mountain range. The adventure starts with a sweeping panoramic flight to land at Lukla’s Tenzing & Hillary Airport, with a unique airstrip. From Lukla then heads on from one lovely village to another to enter the Sagarmatha National Park. Slowly the walk begins with up to Namche Bazaar, a large village almost the size of a small town. The hub for all Khumbu Sherpa due to its colorful weekly market held on Saturday. Hence, the name is Namche Bazaar, a great place for an extra day of acclimatization. From Namche Bazaar, adventure continues towards high Gokyo Valley, the first major destination and highlight.

The Best Seasons

The best seasons for Gokyo & Everest Base Camp via Cho-La Pass, are spring and autumn.  Spring begins from March to May, with full of sunshine most days, but can get cloudy in the late afternoon. Chances of light snowfall with cold mornings and nighttime. In spring with beautiful wildflowers in seasonal bloom, especially the rhododendrons of different colors and species.

The next best season is autumn/fall, starts from September and ends in November. One of the high time and best season for views, and pleasant walks with sunny days. It gets dark soon, due to short sunlight hours, with cold morning, and late afternoon till nighttime. Expect snowfall at this time of autumn season sometimes.

The route and trails to Gokyo & Everest Base Camp Treks

The route is straightforward with a signpost at each junction of the mid-ways, so there will be no confusion. The trails are nicely laid and good for walking until beautiful Gokyo Valley. The trek begins on a gradual trail with steep uphill’s and downhill, but on leaving Dudh Koshi River.

A long climb on a winding trail to Namche Bazaar. The trail leads to cross serval suspension bridges over the same rivers a couple of times. From Namche Bazaar towards Gokyo, on the normal route with a slow rise in elevations. After Gokyo to Thagnak and crossing high Cho-La pass, the trail is narrow climbing over moraine of rocks and boulders.

As well the trail can be slippery with ice and snows, especially on downhill. On reaching Lobuche, the trail is straightforward to Gorakshep and Everest Base Camp. The walks lead over rocks and moraine and crossing icy streams and glaciated areas to reach Everest base camp.

Itinerary

Day 01

Fly to Lukla 2, 846 m and trek to Phakding 2,645 m - 04 hrs.

Morning as time for flight to Lukla, transfer to Kathmandu domestic airport. After checking in and through security, then board in a small aircraft for sweeping scenic flight to Lukla. During air-borne spectacular views of Himalayan range of peaks with Mt. Everest and Nepal’s beautiful country landscapes. After a short flight of 30 to 35 minutes landing at Lukla’s Tenzing & Hillary Airport, after claiming the baggage. Follow the guide to start the trek through Lukla town past shops, stores and restaurants. On the downhill to Dudh Koshi River past serval villages to reach overnight stop in Phakding village.
Day 02

Trek to Namche Bazaar 3,440 m / 11, 350 feet - 06 hrs.

From Phakding a long day walk to Namche Bazaar, due to rapid rise in altitude. Morning walk follows above the Dudh Koshi River and crossing bridge with up to Monjo village. To enter Sagarmatha National Park, listed in World Heritage Sites, Sagarmatha a name for Everest in Nepal. For the Sherpa is Chomolungma similar to Tibetan name and language. From here cross the bridge to Jorsalle for lunch stop. After lunch walk on the river bed within forest of rhododendrons and pine trees and cross a high bridge. From here on undulating winding uphill to reach Namche Bazaar for two overnights stop. Namche Bazaar a size of a town with colorful nice houses offers many good lodge accommodation and best food.
Day 03

At Namche for acclimatization and short scenic hike.

A perfect place and height for rest and acclimatization day, before heading higher altitude. At Namche enjoy a short hike and exercise for acclimatization, the best is to high above Namche Bazaar. Where national park headquarters located with an interesting museum, offers grand views of Mt. Everest. Includes Lhotse, Nuptse and beautiful peak of Ama Dablam, Tharmasarku and Kwangde peaks. Options for hike to Everest View Hotel, first luxury hotel in Khumbu as well listed in Guinness Book of Record. As the world’s highest luxury hotel at 3,800 m high. Rest of the day after lunch explore the town of Namche Bazaar.
Day 04

Trek to Dole 4,110 m- 06 hrs.

After an hour walks, or more from Namche Bazaar our route diverts from the main trail towards Gokyo Valley. A steep climb for an hour to Mong Hill, a nice spot for scenic views of snow-capped peaks. From here down to Phortse Tenga for lunch stop, by the Dudh Koshi River. Afternoon walk follows uphill in a narrow gorge covered in dense vegetation and trees to reach Dole. Located on an open field enclosed by towering rocky cliffs and snow peaks. Transfer to a lovely simple lodge for overnight halt.
Day 05

Trek to Machermo 4, 470 m - 04 hrs.

Morning after breakfast a short steep climb to reach a high ridge, the walk gets easier following the ridge line. Moving further past a small settlement of Luza then reaching atop Machermo with grand views of Mt. Cho-Oyu. From the top downhill to a stream with few populous and willow trees. A short uphill brings you at Machermo for lunch and overnight stop.
Day 06

Trek to Gokyo Valley 4,800 m - 04 hrs.

Another short day to enjoy the walk to Gokyo Valley and its lakes, morning climb up to a high ridge. The walk gets pleasant for an hour more to an isolated place of Panga. After a short rest continue walk towards a field with some vegetation and small trees. As climb begins starts, the coming across the first and then the second lakes. Then finally ending the morning reaching the 3rd main lakes of Gokyo, also called as Dudh Pokhari. The lodges are located just above the main Lake, check into a nice lodge for lunch and overnight stops.
Day 07

Morning climb Gokyo-Ri, afternoon walk to Thagnak 4,760 m - 04 hrs.

Early morning climb for few hours on steep slope to Gokyo-Ri. One of the highest point of the adventure offers stunning panorama of the world’s highest peaks. From Everest, Lhotse, Makalu to Mt. Cho-Oyu with array of giant peaks, includes views of Gokyo Valley. The glacial turquoise lakes with Nepal longest Ngozumpa glacier. After breakfast and lunch at Gokyo, a short gradual walk to the end of Gokyo Valley reaching Thaknag for overnight. Located at the base of Cho-La pass.
Day 08

Cross Cho-La pass 5,420 m trek to Dzongla 4,750 m-08 hrs.

Day 09

Trek to Lobuche 4,960 m - 04 hrs.

From Dzongla, adventure heads closer to the destination, a short steep up and then on winding gradual path to Lobuche for lunch and overnight halt. Located on a corner and well sheltered from the cold wind facing views of Nuptse and Lobuche peaks.
Day 10

Trek to Everest Base Camp 5,364 m and back to Gorakshep - 06 hrs.

Today is the final day to reach the main highlights towards Everest base camp, starting early morning after breakfast. The walk follows north with short climb to reach a rocky moraine above Khumbu glacier. Then slowly the trail follows down to a wide sandy field, where Gorakshep is located. After a short rest continue walk heading east, the reaching Everest base camp. Standing at the bottom of towering snow peaks of Lhotse, Nuptse, Lingtrin and Pumori, with close to Khumbu icefall and glaciers. After achieving the goal, return walk to Gorakshep for overnight stop, before heading downhill to Namche Bazaar and Lukla.
Day 11

Climb Kalapathar 5,643 m/18,514 feet trek to Pangboche 3, 900 m.

Distance 22 km
Early morning hike before breakfast a steep climb of near two hours to reach on top of famous Kalapathar. The highest point of the adventure facing close views of Mt. Everest and surrounding giant peaks. After a great adventurous morning climb descent to Gorakshep for breakfast and packing. From Gorakshep downhill to Lobuche and Thugla, and our route diverts down to Pheriche Valley. At Pheriche a lovely settlement with number of good lodges and restaurants, stopping for lunch. Afternoon walk down to a river and then short climb on top of a small hill, and then downhill to Pangboche village for overnight halt.
Day 12

Trek to Namche Bazaar via Tengboche Monastery- 07 hrs.

A long day hike but more or less downhill with few ups to Tengboche. Tengboche, a scenic spot with an impressive monastery, having time for short tour of the monastery interior. As well enjoy the panorama of snow peas with views of Mt. Everest amidst a lovely forest surrounding. Then walk downhill to Phunki Tenga to cross a small bridge with short steep climb to Lobesa and Shanasha villages. Then rest of the walk is on gradual winding path with down to Namche Bazaar for overnight stop.
Day 13

Trek to Lukla 2, 846 m-07 hours.

Distance 14 km
Enjoy the last day walk of the adventures, a long descent to Dudh Koshi River. The walk follows to a short climb at the entrance and exit post of national park at Monjo village. From here onward on gradual path to Phakding for lunch, afternoon a pleasant walk with last climb to Lukla. On reaching Lukla check into a nice lodge for final overnight around Khumbu and Everest region.
Day 14

Fly from Luka to Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.

As time for flight to Kathmandu, getting ready by 6 a.m. transfer to Lukla air Terminal. Waiting for the plane to arrive from Kathmandu, and then get on board in the small aircraft for scenic flight. On reaching Kathmandu airport transfer for a short drive back to your hotel, rest of the day at leisure.

How difficult is Gokyo & Everest Base Camp trek via Cho-La Pass?

A moderate to adventurous with steep ups and downhills, one of the best and perfect walks around the Himalayas. Trekkers must be aware that Nepal and Himalayan landscapes are all ups and downhills. The only flat land is in the southern Terai belt of Nepal, walking slow and steady will overcome the difficulty.

The walk is straight forward without much difficulties, as long one takes it slow and steady. The only tough about this treks is the gain in altitude, but walking slow and having enough drinks. It is the best way as precaution against the problem of the altitude gain. Rest of the route is straightforward on daily walks to each overnights stops. The only long steep ups to Gokyo-Ri and climb up to Cho-La Pass with long steep descent from the pass. Trekkers needs to be careful on icy and slippery path on descent to Dzongla. From then on following on straightforward route to Everest base camp and back at Lukla.

Gokyo Valley to Everest Base Camp, is not so popular but from last few decades it drawing more trekkers. All lodges on overnight stops, have electricity facilities either run by Hydro or solar power. Trekkers can charge their electronic items on paying extra for charging each gadgets. Some lodges offer free Wi-Fi and Internet services while few places might charge extra. But the connection in some places can be disturbing and takes time to run the service either in long distance call or using the internets.

How are the lodge facilities and foods on this treks?

Simply the best that one can expect around the mountainous and hilly region around Himalayas. The lodge facilities much better in Namche, Phakding and Lukla to Gokyo with options for attached bath and toilets.

Most lodges provide common bathe and toilets with extra charge for using hot showers. However, the rooms are neat and cozy the dining have fireplace to warm the rooms while you enjoy the meals. The foods depending upon the standard of the lodge, but most lodge restaurants provide long list of food menu. From Set menu or La Carte, including all types of refreshments to enjoy, as well some lodge provides fresh bakery products also. The only simple and basic accommodation is in Phortse, due to the nature of its remoteness and isolation than other main trekking trails.

How fit one should be to enjoy Gokyo & Everest base camp treks?

Requires all trekkers to be suitably physically fit and in good health, to take the challenge walking steeps and downhills. When planning and booking this trip, one should need outdoor exercise from walking, jogging. Or any other good physical exercise for an hour on daily basis, and checking your health. Is this treks within a National Parks?

The Khumbu and Everest region is within Sagarmatha National Park. Trekkers have to obtain the Park entrance ticket. The checking and registration for National Park is done at Monjo, and Namche Bazaar.
