Overview

Gokyo Valley Trekking is known as the high country of beautiful glacial lakes, where Nepal’s Himalaya longest Ngozumpa glaciers are located. The original flow of Dudh Koshi River, where the walk follows to Gokyo and its glacial source.

Gokyo Valley Trekking is less crowded than the main trail to Everest Base Camp route, which makes the trek quite interesting. The views of snow-dusted mountains follow you throughout the walks from the start to the end of trekking.

The adventure to Gokyo Valley Trekking is one of the most scenic high-altitude valleys. Where trekkers can enjoy a sweeping panorama of the world’s four highest peaks, namely Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho-Oyu.

The grand vista is seen from the highest points of the adventure on top scenic Gokyo-Ri. Besides the glorious mountain views, enjoy the fantastic scenery of the beautiful Gokyo Valley and its turquoise-colored lakes.

Gokyo the Valley of Lakes begins with an exciting flight from Kathmandu to land at Lukla’s Tenzing & Hillary airport. The walk follows on pleasant gradual trail for a start, passing serval Sherpa villages, enriched with traditional cultures of Buddhism.

As the walk continues, then a long undulating climb reaches the famous Namche Bazaar, the capital of Khumbu villagers. From Namche Bazaar after a day off for acclimatization, adventure continues heading uphill towards Gokyo Valley.

An interesting and scenic walk, after our route diverts from the main busy trail to reach a narrow gorge. Walking into lovely woods of rhododendrons and pine trees to reach an open wide valley at Gokyo. At Gokyo with time to explore around its scenic viewpoint top of Gokyo-Ri for exclusive Himalayan peaks panorama.

Then slowly the adventure comes to an end on a return journey downhill to Namche Bazaar and Lukla. Spending the last overnight in Lukla and around the high country of Khumbu and Everest region. A swift flight next morning brings you to Kathmandu, after a glorious adventure on Gokyo Valley Trekking.

The Best Seasons

The best seasons for Gokyo Valley Treks, are spring and autumn. Spring starts from March to May, most days are sunny, but can get cloudy in the late afternoon. Chances of light snowfall with cold mornings and nighttime, after Namche Bazaar. But beautiful with wildflowers in seasonal bloom, especially rhododendrons of various colors, around the Tengboche Monastery areas.

The next best season is autumn/fall, which begins in September and ends in November. One of the high seasons for views and pleasant walks, sunny days most of the time in autumn. But gets dark soon, due to short sunlight hours, cold morning, and late afternoon till nighttime. Could get snowfall from Namche Bazaar onwards sometimes.

The route and trails to Gokyo Valley Treks

The route is straightforward with a signpost at each junction of the mid-ways, so there will be no confusion. The trails are nicely laid and good for walking until beautiful Gokyo Valley. The trek begins on a gradual trail with steep uphill’s and downhill, but on leaving Dudh Koshi River.

A long climb on a winding trail to Namche Bazaar. The trail leads to cross serval suspension bridges over the same rivers a couple of times. From Namche Bazaar towards Gokyo, on the normal route with a slow rise in elevations.

Itinerary

Day 01

Fly to Lukla 2, 846 m and trek to Phakding 2,645 m - 04 hrs.

Duration 4 hours
Distance 6.2 km
Morning as time for flight to Lukla, transfer to Kathmandu domestic airport. After checking in and through security, then board in a small aircraft for sweeping scenic flight to Lukla. During air-borne spectacular views of Himalayan range of peaks with Mt. Everest and Nepal’s beautiful country landscapes. After a short flight of 30 to 35 minutes landing at Lukla’s Tenzing & Hillary Airport, after claiming the baggage. Follow the guide to start the trek through Lukla town past shops, stores and restaurants. On the downhill to Dudh Koshi River past serval villages to reach overnight stop in Phakding village.
Day 02

Trek to Namche Bazaar 3,440 m / 11, 350 feet - 06 hrs.

From Phakding a long day walk to Namche Bazaar, due to rapid rise in altitude. Morning walk follows above the Dudh Koshi River and crossing bridge with up to Monjo village. To enter Sagarmatha National Park, listed in World Heritage Sites, Sagarmatha a name for Everest in Nepal. For the Sherpa is Chomolungma similar to Tibetan name and language. From here cross the bridge to Jorsalle for lunch stop. After lunch walk on the river bed within forest of rhododendrons and pine trees and cross a high bridge. From here on undulating winding uphill to reach Namche Bazaar for two overnights stop. Namche Bazaar a size of a town with colorful nice houses offers many good lodge accommodation and best food.
Day 03

At Namche for acclimatization and short scenic hike.

A perfect place and height for rest and acclimatization day, before heading higher altitude. At Namche enjoy a short hike and exercise for acclimatization, the best is to high above Namche Bazaar. Where national park headquarters located with an interesting museum, offers grand views of Mt. Everest. Includes Lhotse, Nuptse and beautiful peak of Ama Dablam, Tharmasarku and Kwangde peaks. Options for hike to Everest View Hotel, first luxury hotel in Khumbu as well listed in Guinness Book of Record. As the world’s highest luxury hotel at 3,800 m high. Rest of the day after lunch explore the town of Namche Bazaar.
Day 04

Trek to Dole 4,110 m- 06 hrs.

After an hour walks, or more from Namche Bazaar our route diverts from the main trail towards Gokyo Valley. A steep climb for an hour to Mong Hill, a nice spot for scenic views of snow-capped peaks. From here down to Phortse Tenga for lunch stop, by the Dudh Koshi River. Afternoon walk follows uphill in a narrow gorge covered in dense vegetation and trees to reach Dole. Located on an open field enclosed by towering rocky cliffs and snow peaks. Transfer to a lovely simple lodge for overnight halt.
Day 05

Trek to Machermo 4, 470 m - 04 hrs.

Morning after breakfast a short steep climb to reach a high ridge, the walk gets easier following the ridge line. Moving further past a small settlement of Luza then reaching atop Machermo with grand views of Mt. Cho-Oyu. From the top downhill to a stream with few populous and willow trees. A short uphill brings you at Machermo for lunch and overnight stop.
Day 06

Trek to Gokyo Valley 4,800 m - 04 hrs.

Another short day to enjoy the walk to Gokyo Valley and its lakes, morning climb up to a high ridge. The walk gets pleasant for an hour more to an isolated place of Panga. After a short rest continue walk towards a field with some vegetation and small trees. As climb begins starts, the coming across the first and then the second lakes. Then finally ending the morning reaching the 3rd main lakes of Gokyo, also called as Dudh Pokhari. The lodges are located just above the main Lake, check into a nice lodge for lunch and overnight stops.
Day 07

At Gokyo climb of Gokyo-Ri, rest of the afternoon free at leisure.

An early morning hike to the main highlight a climb of few hours a steep haul to the top of Gokyo-Ri. The highest point of the adventure offers stunning panorama of world’s four highest peaks. Likewise, Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Mt. Cho-Oyu with an array of giant peaks. The view includes of Gokyo Valley and the glacial turquoise lakes with Ngozumpa Nepal Himalayas longest glacier. Rest of the day after breakfast and lunch enjoy a leisure relaxing afternoon marveling the glorious scenery.
Day 08

Trek to Phortse village 3,875 m - 06 hrs.

On completing the major highlights of the trek, return journey near Dole to a quant farm village at Phortse. Located above Dudh Koshi River and away from the main route. As well for the last overnight around the Gokyo Valley route.
Day 09

Trek to Monjocc-06 hrs.

Duration 6 Hours
Distance 8.9 km
Morning down to Phortse Tenga, by the Dudh Koshi River and the climb to Mong high ridge. After a short rest along with glorious view of snow mountain range, then on easy winding path to Namche Bazaar. Having stop for lunch, afternoon walk leads downhill to Dudh Koshi River Valley. The walk continues with short climb past Sagarmatha National Park, to reach Monjo a lovely small village for overnight stop.
Day 10

Trek to Lukla 2, 846 m - 04 hours.

Distance 9.5 km
Last day walk of the adventure follows down to cross a long bridge, and then Walk to Phakding. From Phakding on gradual winding trail with last final climb to Lukla for lunch and last overnight night around Khumbu.
Day 11

Fly from Lukla to Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.

Distance 135 km
As time for flight to Kathmandu, getting ready by 6 a.m. transfer to Lukla air Terminal. Waiting for the plane to arrive from Kathmandu, and then get on board in the small aircraft for scenic flight. On reaching Kathmandu airport transfer for a short drive back to your hotel, rest of the day at leisure.

How difficult is Gokyo Valley Trek?

A moderate to adventurous with steep ups and downhills, one of the best and perfect walks around the Himalayas. Trekkers must be aware that Nepal and Himalayan landscapes are all ups and downhills. The only flat land is in the southern Terai belt of Nepal, walking slow and steady will overcome the difficulty.

The walk is straight forward without much difficulties, as long one takes it slow and steady. The only tough about this treks is the gain in altitude, but walking slow and having enough drinks. It is the best way as precaution against the problem of the altitude gain. Rest of the route is straightforward on daily walks to each overnights stops.

Is Gokyo a popular trekking destination?

Gokyo Valley is not so popular than Everest Base Camp, but one of the most scenic adventure destinations. Due to its fabulous and landscapes scenery. A trek full of charm and beauty from the start to the end of trekking. As well great change of landscapes, and vegetation, the views of high Himalayan peaks remains constant throughout the walks. As well the facilities of lodge accommodation and food is good and the best that one can experience.

Are there facilities for electricity, internets and WI-FI?

All lodges on overnight stops, have electricity facilities either run by Hydro or solar power. Trekkers can charge their electronic items on paying extra for charging each gadgets. Some lodges offer free Wi-Fi and Internet services while few places might charge extra. But the connection in some places can be disturbing and takes time to run the service either in long distance call or using the internets.

How are the lodge facilities and foods on this treks?

Simply the best that one can expect around the mountainous and hilly region around Himalayas. The lodge facilities much better in Namche, Phakding and Lukla to Gokyo with options for attached bath and toilets.

Most lodges provide common bathe and toilets with extra charge for using hot showers. However, the rooms are neat and cozy the dining have fireplace to warm the rooms while you enjoy the meals. The foods depending upon the standard of the lodge, but most lodge restaurants provide long list of food menu. From Set menu or La Carte, including all types of refreshments to enjoy, as well some lodge provides fresh bakery products also. The only simple and basic accommodation is in Phortse, due to the nature of its remoteness and isolation than other main trekking trails.

How fit one should be to enjoy Gokyo Valley treks?

Requires all trekkers to be suitably physically fit and in good health, to take the challenge walking steeps and downhills. When planning and booking this trip, one should need outdoor exercise from walking, jogging. Or any other good physical exercise for an hour on daily basis, and checking your health. Is Gokyo Valley falls within the National Parks?

All the regions of Khumbu, and Everest region is within Sagarmatha National Park. Trekkers have to obtain the Park entrance ticket. The checking and registration for National Park is done at Monjo, and Namche Bazaar.
